Amber is not a true stone but is fossilized resin of coniferous trees from thirty million years ago. It varies in colour from pale yellow to dark brown and is famous for containing insects and small animals which became stuck and enclosed in the resin while it was still liquid. It is a very soft stone, with a hardness of 2. It is found mainly in the Baltic seacoast.
