How to Make Oshun Anointing Oil

Written by Luci Johnson

Oshun is the Yoruban goddess of love, wealth, romance, dance, sex, fertility, divination (using cowrie shells) and beauty. She is the youngest, sweetest and most beautiful of all the lwas or Orishas (African gods).

Oshun is the rivers, streams and waterfalls. The Yoruba clans inhabit parts of west central Africa, in Nigeria. Oshun is the goddess of the river of the same name, and she is especially worshipped in river-towns. During her yearly festival, she is said to choose one or more women dancers to enter into their bodies (much like participants in Vodou ceremonies may be "mounted" or "possessed" by a lwa). These women then take new names in honor of Oshun and are thereafter consulted as healers.

Oshun was taught divination with cowrie shells by Obatala, the first of the created gods. She was at one time the wife of Shango, the storm god, as was Oya, the goddess of the winds and tempests. Her older sister is Yemaya, goddess of the oceans.

With the African slaves, Oshun was brought to the Americas, and adopted into the pantheons that branched out of the African traditions. In the Brazilian religion of Candomblé, which retains close ties with the Yoruban religion, as well as in Cuban Santeriá, She is called Oxum. In Haitian and New Orleans Vodou, She is Erzulie or Ezili, also a goddess of water, beauty and love.

Her number is 5, her colors are yellow, gold and orange. Her sacred birds are peacocks.

Call on Oshun with an offering of spring water and a jar of honey, but make sure you taste the honey first before giving it to her. Oshun is particularly fond of cinnamon, honey, oranges, pumpkins, gold, mirrors, fans and French pastries.

How to Make Oshun Anointing Oil

I make Oshun oil with yellow roses, cinnamon, orange peel, and tonka beans. I put the ingredients in an empty wine bottle and add half water and half soybean oil. I let the oil/water stand for five weeks. Then I strain the oil/water into a pretty glass bottle, I keep the tonka beans in the mixture. The formula should be yellow hued, if not add yellow food coloring.

Now I have anointing oil for Oshun’s candle. Take a cinnamon bun, a yellow, gold or orange candle and set it on your altar. Inscribe Oshun’s name into the candle using a toothpick. Now press the candle into the center of the cinnamon bun. Pour the oil over the candle and onto the cinnamon bun. Write on a piece of paper your money request, pregnancy, love request, or inner and outer beauty request. Light the candle and draw a bath while calling on Oshun to infuse your soul with her magical powers, while pouring the oil into your bath water. This is most effective if repeated for five days..

Thursday is her sacred day, so Thursday through Monday. When the spell is completed, take the cinnamon bun candle and place it under a tree in your backyard, it should disappear eventually.
